Data files do not open

My Banktivity 6 data file (*.bank6) opens the Banktivity program, but the data file will not load. I can log out and then log back in (same user) and the file will open. Any ideas why this happens? I have had similar experiences with Microsoft Office data files.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
