How do I turn off a Firmware password?

I'm trying to reset my NVRAM on my Macbook Air because I cannot access Messages or Facetime. The normal commands were not working, so it is suggested I might have a firmware password on. I don't know what that is, but I think I may need to turn it off so I can fix the thing that will fix the thing that will fix the thing. Thank you!
