What is asking exactly? iTunes? Might you be being asked for an encryption code for your encrypted backup?
Why on earth would you try "0000" - there is no default passcode. Only the passcode that you created.
There are several possible passcodes. If you reset the phone you need the Apple ID passcode that was used to set it up. Not the screen lock passcode.
