High Sierra login screen is frozen for at least 10-20 seconds

My iMac used to wake up immediately when I had Sierra installed.

Now I have just done a clean install of High Sierra and the screen is frozen with the login field greyed out and inaccessible for at least 10-20 seconds.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), Clean install

Under my name the spinner is frozen but the pointer continually shows the pinwheel forever. I’ve attached a picture. Does anyone know why this is happening. Login screen does not return When login out the login screen does not return. We just get a black screen. The cursor is still active but the keyboard just beeps whatever we do. Have to power off and on again to get back in. This ocurred after upgrading to High SierraWe are running a 21.5in iMac with High Sierra 10.13.5
