Lightroom → Photos Workflow

Hi all,

After having lost a lot of hairs pulling them out of my head because of Photo.app's excruciatingly slow performance, and being a professional photographer who regularly uses Lightroom, but needs iCloud sharing for the family, I'd like to have some perspective on this.

Any semi-/professional photographers out there who successfully has integrated a Lightroom -> Photos workflow? Here I think regarding an optimal flow where say, a minimum of duplicate photos are present but where you get the speed and professional editing of Lightroom while at the same time utilising the iCloud (family) sharing capabilities. Optimally with minimal pressure on the daily workflow (perhaps using macros or the like).

Any input and ideas will be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

Massimo

Your question seems clear to me, as I share it. Here's one I found.

Like you, I'd be interested in other examples of "neat tips and tricks" for ways Lightroom users use these two apps side by side for the purposes you describe.

I can't say I've done exactly what you are looking for, but perhaps you could export from Lr into one or more folders that have a Folder Action for automatic import into specified albums within Photos, maybe modified from the method described by Léonie in Automator Service for an Auto Import Folder for Photos.

Also, I use 'exiftool' in a number of scripts to automatically route exported images to different places, depending on keywords set inside Photos or Aperture before export. It may be worth further research.

Did you read Léonie's clear answer re iCloud and iCloud Sharing and iCloud family sharing in your other thread with a duplicate iCloud question?

iCloud is very user centric. It is great to keep the photo library, music library, the documents and data in sync across multiple devices, even with different versions of MacOS X and iOS on the devices. It saves a lot of work. But there is nearly no support for collaboration between several users in iCloud. You can share iWork documents and purchased items (apps, music, books).

It is not for sharing data, it is for sharing a storage plan and select purchases

Yes, I know that they are independent. But I was looking for like-minded photographers who use Lightroom on a daily basis but wants to use Photos.app with its connection the Apple ecosystem. This for instance if using Photos/Apple/iCloud for family use. So to edit photos in Lightroom then importing them into Photos.app and how that could be utilised in the easiest/simplest/most efficient/etc. way.

Yes, and it is not what I was after. I am simply asking for experiences with Lightroom to Photos workflows for say, private use where you can use Lightroom's powerful editing capabilities instead of relying on Photos.app's crappy and slow interface.

I appreciate your help here, but I think I haven't made myself very clear. Let me reiterate:

I am a professional photographer. I know Lightroom and Photos.app extensively. But I also have a family who pretty much all use Apple products, and I, therefore, share images and videos on these different Mac platforms through the iCloud services via Photos.app and the other equivalent programs on iOS.

Now, after Apple killed Aperture, which I back then used exclusively for private use since it had pro features, decent speed and was connected to the "Apple cloud", I was forced to switch to Photos.app. But Photos.app is not only slow but also inadequate when you are used to pro features and speed as you are when working with Lightroom.

So, I was, therefore, wondering if there were anyone out here on the interwebs, who happened to be in the same position as me. If anybody had any experience with using Lightroom for editing and then using Photos.app for "private publishing". For instance, if anybody had some neat tips and tricks for juggling photos between the two programs. Perhaps somebody utilised a great macro or Applescript for automatic export/import, or someone had some pros and cons for dealing with two systems, and so on.

Hope this clarifies my intentions here. :-)

Your question is clear and the answer is clear - as posted 4 times before by me and Old Toad

And there is no possible work flow using both LR and Photos except (third time) to export from LR and import into Photos - totally separate programs with no commonality and no ability to share their database

There is no other way -- asking ten or 100 more times will not change the fact that the workflow you want does not exist except exporting form one and importing into the other having duplicate photos
