What are pending subscriptions?

I've made tons of purchases within apps paid for through my apple ID. I've just noticed I have a "pending" subscription. I've subscribed to this app before so I know it's not a scam. I'm just wondering what exactly a pending subscription is and when I can expect the subscription to process through? Thanks!
