how do I format an external USB connected hard drive? It is a 1 terabyte WD My Passport apple device.

On my MacBook Air, running the macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.3, I want to reformat an external USB connected hard drive? It is a 1 terabyte WD My Passport device bought at my local apple store. I don't seem to be able to find a command or instructions about formatting/reformatting any external hard drives.

MacBook Air, iOS 10.1

Choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu, open the Disk Utility, and erase it.
