My MacBook Pro becomes extremely hot on sleep mode

2 years back while upgraded to OSX Sierra of My Macbook pro Retina 13" late 2012, I noticed it heated up & almost burnt while on sleep mode with the monitor closed. I had to play with for a long time & found the culprit is the Sleep hibernate mode. While with OSX Capitan, its sleep hibernate mode was 1 but after upgrading to OSX Sierra, it automatically became hibernate mode 3. I tried to change to 1 using terminal but it did not allow. Therefore I downgraded to OSX Capitan. But with Capitan, e.mail was troublesome. After OSX High Sierra is launched, I again upgraded to OSX High Sierra. Everything is nice with High Sierra, e.mail also very organised but again my macbook pro become very hot while on sleep mode. I checked the sleep hibernate mode, it is again 3. I tried changing to 0 & 25 but still same heat issue, I could not change it to 1. Any one is there who can help me how I can change sleep hibernate mode to 1 instead of 3? I am sure it will be ok if I can change to 1. I contacted apple service centre but they have no idea what to do. Awaiting support from the apple community please.Regards, Dr. Mostafa

Uninstall Sophos completely. That app is causing it. Such apps do nothing for you at all, and often create noticeable issues.

This said on the Sophos site:

Check the location of the uninstaller:

  • Uninstall using local removal tool. This is located in the Applications folder and it means Spotlight can find the program for you. On the keyboard, press Cmd (⌘) + Spacebar to open a Spotlight search, type 'Remove Sophos'. If the program exists (i.e., you haven't moved it to Trash) Spotlight will find it and you can press enter to run it.

I don't see anything special.

But if you want to change the hibernate mode you can try this:

Restart in the RecoveryPartition (CMD+R), start Terminal from the menu,

in Terminal copy/paste following command

csrutil disable

then restart and set the hibernatemode to 1.

After that, again to the RecoveryPartition, start Terminal, copy/paste the following command

csrutil enable

the restart. The hibernate mode should stay at 1.

Hi Lex,

Thank you for your advice. I tried to change Hibernate mode after csrutil disable from Terminal in Recovery mode, but it did not allow. Please see:

Drs-MacBook-Pro:~ endolap$ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1

See pmset(1) for details: 'man pmset'

Drs-MacBook-Pro:~ endolap$

Mar 24, 2018 2:39 AM in response to endolap

There are three hibernatemodes:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 = suspend to RAM only (default on desktops)
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1 = suspend to disk only
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3 = suspend to disk + RAM (default on laptops)

(Sometimes also a different value is used 25 or 50)

I don't know why you think "1" should avoid your issue on your mac.

These settings should work in (High)Sierra: 3, not 1, 0 (you get a warning) on a laptop.

I am practically sure that you can set to 1 when sip is disabled (check this with csrutil status).

You can avoid sleep completely: SystemPreferences->EnergySaver->slide 'computer sleep' to "never"

Mar 24, 2018 3:17 AM in response to Lexiepex

Hi Lex, thank you for your attention. 2 years back I upgraded to Sierra & my Mac became hot on sleep mode. Before upgrading Mac hibernate mode was 1 but after upgrading it became 3, I could not change it to 1. Finding no way, I revert back to previous OSX & changed hibernate mode to 1 & my Mac became normal. I used it for 02 years, only from Sept 2017, e.mail was making trouble, so I decided to upgrade to High Sierra & problems returned. I tried to revert back to Capitan again but APS disc type did not allow.

In High Sierra, there is no Hibernate mode 1, thats the reason it is not allowed to changed to 1. Any other suggestions what I can do now? Its a habit to close the lid instead of shut down the Mac & any accident can happen if I forget to shut down.
