How many columns are there in your Excel sheet? Numbers isn't designed for large data sets and can only handle 200+ columns.

If your Excel sheet is very "wide" but not too "tall" you could try transposing it so it is taller than it is wide (Edit > Paste Special and click the 'Transpose' checkbox). Then try opening it with Numbers.

you can download, and install, LibreOffice for free to open MS Excel documents. Of course you can also purchase a legal copy of MS Excel to open Excel files .... most of the time 😉

The message means exactly what it says. Your Excel table is too large to fit into a Numbers table.

Reduce the number of (active) columns in the Excel document to 255 or fewer.*

Reduce the number of (active) rows in the Excel document to 16 300 or fewer.**

Then try importing to Numbers.

You could also try splitting (a copy of) your Excel document into two "worksheets". I have not tested that process, hence the advice to try it with a copy of your doc.

**Actual number of possible rows is rounded down to nearest 100.

*Both of these are absolute maximums for the number of columns and rows. Practical limits are much lower, and Numbers will slow down appreciable long before these limits are reached.
