Why was I charged tax for entering my Apple Music gift card when it registered the gift card?

I used the three month trial for Apple Music. Then I had a 3 month Apple Music gift card that I went up redeem. I am pretty sure it worked because the expiration date got moved back three months. However, i got an email of an iTunes purchase for $2.47 that was supposedly the tax on Apple music. Why go I have to pay tax for redeeming a gift card?

I don't know the details of the Apple Music gift cards but it is standard to have to pay tax on purchases from Apple. Different places have different tax rates so I am presuming tax isn't factored into the value of a gift card which might only cover the base value of a subscription and not tailor it to fit each local tax law.
