Disable Apple Pencil automatic drawing

Is there a way to disable automatic drawing with the Apple Pencil.

I purchased the Pencil to use mostly as a navigation tool, so I do not always touch the wrong thing with my fat fingers. I find it very frustrating when iOS creates a new note whenever I want to clear a notification and don‘t think of using my finger instead of the Pencil. It is also extremely annoying that the just updated Numbers, Pages and Keynote apps now implemented automatic drawing without the possibility of turning that behaviour off. I use Numbers a lot, and navigating with the Pencil was great to use check boxes and place the cursor in the desired location within cells for editing. Now, it has become a useless tool within the apps that I use the most!!

I just realized today that automatic drawing can be disabled in the Notes app, why is this not available in the other apps? There should also be an option (in Accessibility?) that allows users to turn off automatic drawing and Notes creation! Users who want automatic drawing in apps could still be able to enable that behaviour in the individual apps’ settings.

Please fix this ASAP (or tell me where the settings can be changed to stop that very frustrating behaviour)!

iPad Pro Wi-Fi, iOS 11.2.6, Apple Pencil

Way late to the party here, but for those who come here looking - like I did and didn't find the answer. Go into settings, scroll to the app you are using, in my case it was keynote, and then select 'Select and scroll with Apple Pencil' :)

I was similarly annoyed with the fact that I couldn't use the Apple Pencil to open or expand (on iOS 12) notifications from the lock screen. I found that you can turn off the 'feature' that automatically created a new note in the settings of the Notes app. Now I can use it to expand, scroll, delete, etc... on the lock screen. I don't use Numbers, Pages or Keynotes, but maybe they have a similar setting.

My inquiry was out of curiosity only.

It wasn’t meant to address your issue.

Here’s what you can do.

iPad Feedback

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

No, but when youndon’t get any type of response, you can go to the app store and leave a review.

That's what I don't understand. Where on the App Store are you leaving a review for the Pencil? Are you suggesting leaving a review in Keynote, Numbers and Pages? If that's what you mean, it's a good idea. All I'm suggesting is you make that clear to people.

I have a question to the two of you that posted.

If you are just using an expensive Apple Pencil for just navigation, instead of doing any note taking or drawing with this stylus, why didn't you just purchase a much cheaper regular, standard capacitive stylus?

These are much cheaper, easier to find and replace, if you lose it. You do not have to constantly worry about keeping the Pencil charged up.

Standard capacitive stylus and even the newer fine point, battery driven stylii (Li-ion rechargeable OR standard AA/AAA battery replaceable) are even cheaper than an Apple Pencil!

Why splurge out on a $99 stylus when just about any ole’ capacitive stylus would work for navigation, as well.

Do either or both of your use your Pencils for anything else, like writing or drawing on an iPad Pro?

Have you download any of the Apple Pencil compatible apps to use with your Apple Pencil?

Just curious as to why you made a decision to spend $99 on a stylus that you appear not to use for any writing or drawing when much cheaper alternatives are out there and work with this iPad.

Quick answer is: because I can, and because I want to!! At the start of my question I state that I use it "mostly" for navigation; that is not the same as "exclusively". Also, your comment/question does nothing to answer my original question. It is just an opinion that does not help me solve my "real" problem. Unless there is a clause in the user agreement that forbids Apple Pencil buyers from using it as a navigation tool, then it is totally legitimate to expect that it would function properly for that purpose. What you personally think of the way I use the Apple Pencil and that there are cheaper alternatives is irrelevant to the question that I asked!

I updated pages today and with pencil I can no longer scroll or use the pencil to place edits. So frustrating. Rendered my pencil useless for Pages editing. This is the main reason I bought the pencil and iPad. I wish they just left it alone.

I also do not understand why the annotate option automatically turns back on when you touch the screen with pencil. Grrrr

I use my Apple pencil drawing possibilities on my iPad Pro with photo editing (ie. Affinity photo) and it is fine.

But with Numbers and Pages, automatic drawing is a drawback. The only workaround i have found is to stop using them on my iPad, and limit their use to my iMac.

It is an important drawback, and i am waiting for Apple correction.

The place Michel and I have suggested is the Feedback link. You don't leave reviews with stars there. That's why I don't understand what you're suggesting. I also don't understand your hostility. If people want this changed they should definitely let Apple know. If you know of an additional place, other than feedback, that Apple pays attention to, you should tell people where it is. It can only help.

What's the point in adding a review of Apple's own apps in the iOS App Store, if Apple only tells you to do the same things we tell you to do.

An Apple employee telling you to use Apple’s Feedback pages.

Also, you have the option of calling Apple, directly, here, which I have, also, posted numerous times in this post.
