Disable Apple Pencil automatic drawing

Is there a way to disable automatic drawing with the Apple Pencil.

I purchased the Pencil to use mostly as a navigation tool, so I do not always touch the wrong thing with my fat fingers. I find it very frustrating when iOS creates a new note whenever I want to clear a notification and don‘t think of using my finger instead of the Pencil. It is also extremely annoying that the just updated Numbers, Pages and Keynote apps now implemented automatic drawing without the possibility of turning that behaviour off. I use Numbers a lot, and navigating with the Pencil was great to use check boxes and place the cursor in the desired location within cells for editing. Now, it has become a useless tool within the apps that I use the most!!

I just realized today that automatic drawing can be disabled in the Notes app, why is this not available in the other apps? There should also be an option (in Accessibility?) that allows users to turn off automatic drawing and Notes creation! Users who want automatic drawing in apps could still be able to enable that behaviour in the individual apps’ settings.

Please fix this ASAP (or tell me where the settings can be changed to stop that very frustrating behaviour)!

iPad Pro Wi-Fi, iOS 11.2.6, Apple Pencil

Way late to the party here, but for those who come here looking - like I did and didn't find the answer. Go into settings, scroll to the app you are using, in my case it was keynote, and then select 'Select and scroll with Apple Pencil' :)

The important point is, we have purchased a product because it did what we required. 2 years latter it suddenly does not meet the original specification. All that is required is an option in the settings of the relevant apps to turn the new default off. A simple request and everyone will be happy.

Please Apple sort this one out.

So, submit your feedback to Apple.

Yep, I have been using PDF Expert for some time as I have to deal with so many PDFs and the pencile is perfect there. On an iPad navigation is the key to the machine where a mouse is not present. Very frustrating every time I try to select a box and have to back track to get rid of the effects the drawing function creates. I will leave comment as you suggested.

How long have you folks been married? This sounds like a full blown domestic dispute over a very paltry thing.

I don't believe I've exchanged more than one or two comments with any given user (with one exception where I was asking clarifying questions and ended up agreeing with the person) in this post. Perhaps you're mistaking my responses to different people as being to the same person? It's important to check the "in response to...." line.

I have also not really been disputing anything. People are absolutely entitled to their opinion about how the Apple Pencil should work. But, complaining in these that they don't like the way it currently works will not effect the changes they are seeking. So, I strongly encourage them, if the matter is important to them, to submit feedback to Apple.

What constructive contributions do you have to make to this thread?

Please accept my apology. I am in total agreement that complaining and bickering over whether or not one should or should not have purchased an Apple pencil will not solve anything. My comments were not directed at you. I responded inappropriately, and in the wrong place. This was, after all, the first time I have ventured into an Apple forum.

Regards.

No worries. It can be a confusing place at first. Another thing that's confusing to some people is that you only have 15 minutes to edit your post. After that, it's set in stone.

I enthusiastically bought this pencil after a neat demo in the Apple Store.

They didn't show me how it worked in Pages. What I saw was mainly a drawing App.

I use it as a nav tool endlessly. I do this because it's cleaner than using my fingers. They tend to leave marks. So I use the Pencil, my screen stays clean, and I'm happy.

But I have to do a brain switch when I'm using Pages. The number of times I've had to pull the Pencil away and hit the undo button (with my finger) is beyond counting now.

I'll go and buy a cheap rubber tip stylus as a bridge to solving the problem.

I don’t recall the original specifications or anything put out by Apple since ever referring to the Apple Pencil as a display navigation tool. They have always referred to it as a tool for drawing, sketching, writing, etc with high precision and control.

I get get that many use it as a navigation tool as well, but that was never part of any “specifications” nor advertised as such.

I have not had that experience. I enabled scrolling/navigation in settings as directed. I have had no popups of any kind. At one point I chose to turn on drawing to try something. It worked beautifully, and turned off when I got out of it. It works exactly the same way it did before the infamous upgrade. I only use Keynote, so I don’t know about Numbers or Pages...can’t imagine why anyone would even want to scribble on a spreadsheet. But I am very happy with the recent update.

I have exactly the same gripe as the original poster. The Apple stylus is the closest tool as an alternative to a mouse. I do use my pencil to write notes mark up documents, whiteboard with people etc. But it’s most important use is to get around the limitations of not having a mouse to work with spreadsheets and document editors. The ipad is totally powerful enough to replace my PC but they make it difficult for the non creative users. For some of us it is a business tool first but with the ability to do all the other cool stuff like read, watch films, As I have no creative bones in my body I will not be using its drawing capabilities - but until they bring out a mouse its the best alternative for the accuracy needed to move the curser precisely

Yes I have been following this thread since the function changed its initial behavior. As an artist I love the ipencil but as a business man I abandoned the numbers app due to the instant markup feature. I was curious to whether the apple developers would ignore the response of this new feature that divided many of us. It seems to me that just having an option to turn it off would have been a better update plan. And as for the ...just go get a stylus comment … let’s see

I now have to carry a stylus too?

when a perfectlay functioning ipencil is with me?

Anyway I would like to thank Apple’s developers for addressing this and giving those of us who just want a smudge free screen our initial ipencil behavior back.

Thank you
