Date Modified Changing When I open Files!

Help!

I have a Seagate External Harddrive. When I open files on my harddrive, recently it has been changing the "Date Modified" even though I am not doing any modifications - I am just opening the file (ie to look at a picture/jpeg). I am annoyed because it changes the date that the photo was taken (Although it does not change the "Date Created"). This happened after I changed to a new Operating System, so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Thanks!

Again, please what app is opening the file.

Opening your desktop would be the Finder looking at your <username> -> Desktop Folder

The app that is opening your picture could be the one that is doing this. But without knowing what app that is, we cannot have someone with the same software experiment and pass back what we found?
