Attempt to start in the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and reinstall Mac OS. If that will not work then you can attempt an Internet Recovery which is explained in About macOS Recovery - Apple Support . If your iMac is too old to support Internet Recovery then you will need the original install discs that shipped with the computer. If you no longer have those then you may be able to order them from AppleCare for a modest cost. You will need the computer's serial number and a credit to order as the discs are specific to each computer.

If the computer is a 2012 or later and you still have problems then you will likely need to take the computer to your local Apple Store or AASP for assistance.
