MacBook Pro mid 2012 running slow and hot.

My standard issue MB Pro has has original empt when I bought it new later in 2012. 4 gig memory, 500 gig drive 2core i5 processor. I am running on high sierra (10.13.4) since early this year. I noticed a similar issue raised in the Apple community in early 2016, with a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, but didn't see a clear resolution.

I did download and run etrecheck. It said the major issue was... 'Poor performance. EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. Very unusual' I'm using less than a 100 gig of space including the system. The slowness and heating problem has been getting progressively worse over the last year or so. It occurs with streaming video through to the Apple TV, but also just with Safari browsing or using excel. I rarely have multiple apps or windows open.

Use Activity Monitor to Kill Runaway Processes

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity.

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.
  7. Use Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

In the mean-time I've checked pricing on the SSD, memory and the HD cable. I'm thinking just replace the hard drive and cable and upgrade memory later if necessary.

Also the 2 old internet plug-ins, Silverlight and I photo photocast, as well as sharepoint browser. Don't know what these are for. I'm thinking delete. I also periodically get prompts to upgrade 3rd party flash player. Any sense whether this is needed?

I did download and run etrecheck. It said the major issue was... 'Poor performance. EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run.

Etrecheck's developer intended for users to post the report in these forums. Please do that so we can look for known "bad actors" in software that can slow a Mac. Those of us who have read 100s of these may spot an issue you could miss.

Also a long Etrecheck runtime like that can herald a hard drive failure. However, we need to see the report and eliminate software issues before jumping to that conclusion. That model also has shown a unique hardware issue: wear of the hard drive cable through the vibration of normal handling and transport. Symptoms of a worn hard drive cable mimic a failing hard drive, making all that more important for us to use your Etrecheck results to eliminate software issues first.

I have that model that shipped with the same specs are yours and it has never been slow. I upgraded RAM long ago to 8GB and, last November, exchanged the rotational hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD). Now it feels like a new computer.

In that model, installing RAM, changing out the drive, and replacing the hard drive cable are easy, at-home jobs. That was the last MBP that allowed the owner such access.

Also responding to Kappy's suggestions (this was after I did the initial EtreCheck which had a runtime of 20:14):

A. I used the activity monitor. No problems with runaway apps.

B. Reset the NVRAM and the SMC.

C. Ran the Apple Hardware test (extended mode) with no problems noted.

D. I then moved a bunch of files and folders off my desktop to the hard drive and deleted an old user login app, Canon IJ Scanner. We have a new Epson printer.

I then reran the EtreCheck, posted below (that was easy). Note the runtime down to 11:30, big improvement, but still slow.

Let me know what you think and thanks a lot. As my machine is almost 6 years old, I'm wondering how much- if necessary- a SSD drive (200 gig should be plenty for my needs) and 2x4 gig memory would cost). Also I'm a mac user for over 30 years, but don't know if I can make the changes at home.

EtreCheck version: 4.1.4 (4A203)

Report generated: 2018-04-02 08:40:23

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 11:30

Performance: Poor

Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

Runs slow and often hot.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Poor performance- EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. This is very unusual.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Upgradeable hard drive- This machine’s hard drive could be replaced with an SSD. This would dramatically improve your machine’s performance.

Unsigned files- There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

MBP running like a top now. Thanks so much to Kappy and Allan Jones for the advice. I did put in an SSD drive and added memory. Both procedures in fact were easy using the BatPower S2 tool kit for macs. The HD cable looked ok, so I'm not going to change it.

The only installation glitch; After installing, I started up and pressed cmd R to get the utility menu over the internet. And then hit install mac OS. It couldn't find a drive. I tried once more (worried that I hadn't installed the new drive properly). Same deal. But then I thought perhaps it needed formatting. So I started up with cmd R once more, picked Disk repair option off the utility menu, gave the SSD a new name/ 1 partition and hit apply or ok. Then went back to install mac OS, which now found my SSD and I was home free after a couple hours of swapping OS and restoring files.
