Mail Unable to Verify Account Name or Password

Using OX El Capitan Desktop, 10.11.6. I changed my password on Google, but Mail still refuses to accept the new password even after several tries - quitting, restarting, etc. I can get mail only by logging into Google. How do I get Mail to recognize my password change? My iPad and phone both recognize change but desktop does not.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Thanks for the answer. I changed password both on network on iMac and on iPad Settings and tried same on cell phone (android). Gmail says it needs port 993, but the default was 995. I changed to 993 on both iMac and phone - works on iPad (I am reading your response through Mail there) but on both phone and iMac continues to say 'unable to verify.' But I delete account, won't I lose my past email! and on all 3 devices? If I do this only on phone, will that delete it on iMac too? Thanks for your answer.

Thanks, Eric. I did change the Google security settings to briefly allow 'less secure apps' - and my Mail inbox was instantly flooded with emails from an account with Verizon I had deleted 5 years ago! But no new email. The gmail prompt still read 'unable to verify account.' I tried using Export Mailbox backup - I got a 20 MB document - when I opened it, it was a single email (perhaps the most recent) consisting of about 10 lines, that was all. I'm scared if I just delete the Gmail account on Mail - it will erase everything, and when I add it back, it won't save my existing mailboxes or past emails I have. Sorry for the complexity of the question. I have a backup hard drive - but don't know how to import the Mail part of it back to my iMac.

SMTP - "connection and login to server succeed."

POP "trying to log into this POP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct."

When I try to go to the gmail account and re-enter the new password, on iMac it simply continues the circle: 'unable to verify account name or password.' But oddly, I can get this using Mail on my iPad without any problems.

Hope that's helpful info.

The port settings were 995 - I did uncheck automatically detect/maintain settings option. Still nothing for POP. SMTP is fine (and I can send from Mail, just not receive). On Google settings, I tried to enable POP for all mail - but it doesn't save, and still nothing, Mail still says 'unable to verify account/password'. Google configuration instructions say Port should be 993 tho (and imap.gmail.com as incoming.) Should I be changing 995 to 993 on Mail Connection Doctor to match? Connection Doctor also lists incoming mail as pop.gmail. Should it be changed to imap.gmail to match as well? Other than that, I'm stumped.
