Updating to 10.13.4

On a MacBookPro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) the update to 10.13.4 from 10.13.3 ended with in Installer Log

-----

Mar 31 16:30:41 MacBook-Pro opendirectoryd[186]: [session]

flushing dirty record '/private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/computers/localhost' from line 5074

Mar 31 16:30:41 MacBook-Pro opendirectoryd[186]: [session] ODNodeRelease completed

----

There is a file '/private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/computers/localhost.plist' but that is short (no line 5074)

Anyway, running the hardware diagnostic revealed an SSD system disk error "4HHD/11/4000000:SATA(0,0)".

Disk Utility (run from the recovery disk)

User uploaded file

finds some Underallocated space.

My question is, how serious is such a problem? Since Operation successful!

The Mac bootes in 10.13.3 and runs and behaves normal. The update for now is off the table. It is not even clear if that causes the update to terminate as seen in the log.

Some advice/ideas?

Wow! I think i fixed it! In the error screen choose the utilities > boot disk > and select hard drive (i only have 1 option) .... after reboot i am back to normal OS 10.13.3 ... The installation error is because the update 10.13.4 is stuck as the boot disk and even if restarting, the boot disk continues to stay. wow what a relief

Thanks Duane,

the advice is appreciated and I may have to bite the bullet sooner or later. At this time I 'm still happily running 10.13.3 and have no trouble whatsoever using the system daily. I'm reluctant to fidel with the hardware until it really breaks. Since it is not my only computer and I keep backups upt o date I rather refrain from upgrading. A MacBook Air 2017 is running the latest system and I find no advantage with the newest release of High Sierra.

You could be correct Duane, but I don't see how a software update is directly related to a hardware issue. I think it may have more to do with the encryption. I had to re-enter my encryption/hard drive password in order for the update to work and be able to boot. Weird.

Just to straighten things out,.Duane replied to a posting by me, where I found a disk issue when upgrading.

The upgrade failed repeatedly, with a write failure. And a followup system check flagged the hard drive. The disk repair could not verify some space, else finished fine.

I got the same update error today on my 2017 touchbar 15” Mac. I can boot it no problem into Safe Mode, the disk utility first aid says ssd is perfect, and i have 300GB available.

Every normal boot goes straight to the “ The macOS installation couldn’t be completed.” white screen with the last error being “Macbook-Pro opendirectoryd[186]: [auth] failed to write file“ ....

Do i really have to format and reinstall OS? If thats the case why does Safe Mode appear to work perfectly.

Hopefully theres a recovery? I’d be happy to roll back the update if possible or download a utility that will complete the update.
