Family Share and using gift cards.
My son got a gift card loaded it on his phone but when he wants to make a purchase it comes up to my credit card. How do we use the balance from the gift card instead?

See How iTunes Store purchases are billed - Apple Support. Even with credit on his account iTunes may still require that the active payment method for the account is validated.
