need help w unsuccessful OS update

start up screen message:

macOS could not be installed on your computer...the path /System/installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

How can I quit the installer and exit this update?

no option apparent except to click on “restart” which just brings me back to same place

Do you have a backup you can restore from?

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.

Bought the Mac in May 2014. Had been updating whenever needed. Have been getting messages about system being almost out of memory lately and have deleted files to free up memory lately.

I just returned from a trip, computer was fine when I closed down and turned off, was not in the middle of an update as far as I knew. When I turned back on this morning was greeted with message above.

This is a desktop iMac. Sorry I don’t know which model.
