Netgear Nighthawk R6900v2

I have an iPhone 8 and iPad Pro (running latest iOS) that have trouble connecting to the 2.4ghz channel of my router at home. I will get a “wrong password” and “unable to connect to network” message. I can connect to the 5ghz channel without issue. What is point in having dual band router otherwise.

I can restart router or change channels and it will temporarily work and overnight will do the same thing again.

I have tried troubleshooting with Netgear by:

-changing channels

-hard resets

-downgrade firmware

-having latest firmware

-exchanged units

This seems to be a common occurrence with iOS devices and Netgear. Does anyone have a solution?

If they connect fine to the 5Ghz radio, why even bother worrying about the 2.4Ghz radio? The bandwidth and speeds on the 5Ghz will be much greater than the 2.4Ghz. It’s an 802.11AC router, not an 802.11AD router, so it cannot simultaneously send and receive over both channels with any one client device. Any one device in AC can only connect to one frequency for both sending and receiving traffic.

In the nighthawk firmware can you aggregate both into a single SSID and simply let the router pick the optimal connection for any device? I have a tri-band ASUS AC router and I use it that way - single aggregate SSID and the router will pick which radio a device connects to, based on signal strength, quality and network traffic and QoS rules.

P.S. A dual or tri-band 802.11AC router includes the 2.4GHz radio solely to provide backwards compatibility with older 802.11a/b/g/n devices which lack 5Ghz connectivity.

Both will slow down as you get further away, but the 5Ghz will likely still outperform the 2.4Ghz at any range, especially since reviews of that router seem to indicate its 2.4Ghz performance is not stellar to begin with (Its 5Ghz performance rated quite well though in CNet’s review).

See what the netgear genie software offers to tweak the connection, maybe set up a single SSID and look at QoS rules to try to optimize the connection. There are some good Netgear user forums as well to look for suggestions on optimal settings.
