How to delete camera roll photos in Photos?

in iPhoto, one can select and delete photos that are on the iPhone (when connected).

I cannot fathom how to delete unwanted cameral roll pics with Photos. The only option is to 'Delete items after import', but the 'items' have already been imported-hence wishing to remove them from the phone!

When you import to photos it will show you two sections - "new photos" and already imported".

Import all new photos to Photos, then delete everything from the iPhone, either with image capture or on the device. You will know, that all photos have already been imported, so it is save to select all on the iPhone or in ImageCapture to delete them.

For the time being, iPhoto is still running on the current version of MacOS X. You need iPhoto 9.6.1. If you regularly updated your system and iPhoto, you will have the current version installed.

Why does Photos even have an import button if we are no supppsed to use two apps to import and manage, instead of one?

Photos has been designed to give you an easy workflow with iCloud Photo Library instead of importing manually. I have not used the "Import" button in years. The new photos and videos from my iPhone are syncing seamlessly from my iPhone to the Mac, and when I delete them on my Mac, they vanish automatically from iCloud Photo Library and all other synced devices.

So, there is no way to delete previously imported images, or even know which have been imported any more? This is not 'different workflow', this is loss/lack of functionality.

This is wholly counter intuitive (and quite daft). Where have you read, from Apple this is somehow a preferred workflow?

I have Photos version 3.0. There is definitely no new photos and already imported items you describe.

I also opened Image Capture. This does not indicate which photos are already imported either.

To me, it appears there is no easy way to tell what is imported, what is not, or to easily delete previously imported images.

You also mention that photo stream items are only kept for 30 days. Does this mean my photos are deleted by Apple after that point? How does one ensure safety of photos on my local machine? I cannot seem define a 'safe' workflow with Photos (yes, I have read the documentation from Apple-it does not address these questions) that does not ensure loss of my images.

I'm also having Photos 3.0, and my iPhone is showing the two separate sections "New" and "Already Imported". However, Photos needs a few moments to prepare the two sections. My iPhone has 256GB of storage, and there are quite a few photos on the iPhone.

My Photo Stream is not meant to be used as storage for your photos. It is a temporary buffer for transferring photos between your devices. This buffer has a capacity of at most 1000 photos in iCloud. New photos are added to My Photo stream, and if you are taking more photos, the older photos will be purged to make room for newer photos. Also, photos will stay at most 30 days in My Photo Stream in iCloud. The photos will be removed from My Photo Stream, but your devices should have imported the photos from My Photo Stream to the library within the 30 days. The imported photos will stay in your library.
