Airport and Powerbook Titanium

Hi - I have a question that I am sure will be easy to answer. I have a Titanium, 500MHz (yes I know it's old - we've grown up together), running 10.3.9. I do not have an airport card and want to get wireless ability. So far as I can see that means I have to get an airport card (not the express or extreme?). Suggestions as to where to get one? Do I need a base station? My daughters have one for their pcs (recent model Acers) so would I be able to access that? My apologies if this is simplistic.

Hi, pmorr. If you want an Apple wireless card, then yes, it will have to be the original Airport rather than an Airport Extreme card (the Extreme card doesn't fit into a Tibook, physically). But original Airport cards are extravagantly expensive now, and there's no compelling reason to buy one. There are several good third-party wireless cards that will go into your Powerbook's PC card (CardBus) slot and provide performance equal to or better than an Airport Extreme Card (same speed, greater range) provides in AE-equipped Aluminum Powerbooks. They use Apple's own drivers, so they require no third-party software, and they set up just like Apple's cards. The only downside to using one is that it ties your CardBus slot up. Here are three such cards:

OK. I fixed my problem. I am using the Sonnet Aria Extreme PCI CardBus. I have no AirPort card. You will need to update your software while hardwired to the internet. You need to update to Airport 4.2 for OS 10.3.3 and above. Then get the update for the airport extreme. It has new information to allow the Powerbook to see thrid party cards.

You can access this by clicking the blue apple and selecting the "Software Update"

I hope this helps.

By the way...when you get your card working, it should be able to pick up wireless routers near you.
