Can't see Apple Pencil Battery status in Notification Center

I just purchased a new iPad and paired my Apple Pencil with it. The pencil is working fine. Bluetooth is on, I paired it and it shows as connected in the bluetooth settings, but I cannot see the battery life in the Notification Center. I swipe down, switch to today view, and there is no indication of the battery life. On my previous iPad I had no problems with this, but now I can't figure out how to make it show.

Any suggestions? I'm guessing I'm missing a setting somewhere, but everything I find online just says to connect it and it will show.

TIA

Do you see the battery life for your iPad in the today view? If you don't is the Battery widget enabled?
