I have an old iPod Shuffle that i would like to use how do i go about using it?

I have an old iPod shuffle that i would like to put new music on. I haven't used it in awhile and my desktop is not recognizing it. What do i do?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 16 GB RAM

Try How to force restart your iPod shuffle - Apple Support. Try another cable/dock.
