webmail speed on iMac V iPad

Plusnet Webmail runs quickly on my iPad but is terribly slow on my iMac, both using Safari and using Firefox.

Both devices are on the same wifi network and the iMac runs quickly on all other applications.

Any ideas?

Outgoing gmail on iMac I cannot send outgoing gmail. When I go to Edit SMPT list, it shows google and hotmail. The hotmail shows as being in use by hotmail and gmail. When I change the outgoing smpt server to google it reverts in 5 seconds to hotmail.
