Frequently refreshing web pages in Safari

I use an iPad Mini 2 with Safari, iOS up to date. For some time, starting at least with iOS 11 and perhaps later versions of 10, certain websites frequently scroll back to the top on their own while I'm reading down below. I've assumed they are refreshing and that's what is causing it, but maybe there's something in the interaction between their specific interfaces and the iOS that's involved. Examples are the New York Times website and the forums section of psaudio.com. Some months ago, I wrote the NYT about it, but they claimed it was not their doing, to write Apple. It doesn't seem to happen all the time with these sites, but a lot, and sometimes when it gets going it happens repeatedly, then seems to finally settle down. Or maybe it's because my stylus is locked into the screen to try to prevent it happening again. Longer articles and forum threads (down the page) especially seem to elicit the behavior, or maybe that's where I notice it the most. Obviously, when it occurs, it's annoying, making it hard to read.

Thanks. No access to cell data. I've seen the behavior happen at the same sites on other wi-fi networks, such as at the public library, and restarting the Mini has occurred many times, whether by me directly or after each iOS update. I'd say the third method is the only one of possible local relevance at this point. I'll report back.

Btw, this problem didn't occur during the first 2-1/2 to three years I had the Mini, using it on the exact same sites. That's why my thought that it's either something about more recent iOS versions and/or an interaction with the programming at some websites.

Hello highstream,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with certain websites in the Safari app on your iPad. To help with this issue, please force close the Safari and follow these steps, and then test your issue again.

Connect to a different network

Try to load a website, like www.apple.com, using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network and then try loading the website.

Restart your device

Turn off your device and turn it on again.

Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance. If you still need help, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Safari.
  2. Tap Clear History and Website data.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website data to confirm.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If Safari displays a blank page or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Cheers!
