Preview won't open postscript or eps files

Dear colleagues

I'm stumped: my copy of preview will no longer open .ps or .eps files ( which I need to convert to .pdf).

Preview WILL read and convert those files if I reboot in safe mode, but not if I boot up normally. I have not added any 3rd party software or hardware to my Mac. It's just stopped working.

The Mac also will not allow the attaching of a convert ps to pdf folder action script to a folder. I wonder if there is some kind of Quartz Image Events preferences file that could be corrupted?

You may be right about preferences, but I would try deleting Preview's preferences to start with. They are located in your user folder>Library>Preferences and the files are called com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist and com.apple.Preview.plist.

With Preview closed, make a folder on your desktop to put those files in. If it turns out that you don't really need them, then throw them away.

Once you've done that, either logout and back in or restart the machine and open Preview to see if that worked. You probably don't have to logout or restart, but I make it a habit to do that when I've messed with preferences and library folders.

There is also a file in that same preferences folder called com.apple.QuartzComposer.editor.plist which you could move into a folder on your desktop to see if it is causing the problem, but I wouldn't mess with that one until after I saw if the Preview file deletion works.

Let us know what, if anything works.

Dear colleagues

I'm still in trouble: I reinstalled 10.4 (archive & install) , but the problem persists. Preview will not open eps or .ps files, nor will 'convert to pdf' folder actions work.

Can anyone help?

I have the same problem. I followed the instructions to remove the prefs for Preview, and it didn't work, either.

Neither did it help to create an entirely new account.

Any ideas?

PS. This issue seems to be a topic of several posts on the forum. Maybe it's time for some response from Apple? Anyone tried to ask them?
