Active stylus stopped working on iPad but still works on Android devices

I have a Heiyo Amber stylus, which is sort of a cross between an active and a passive stylus in that it is powered but doesn’t require any additional software or a Bluetooth connection to the device. In the Amazon listing for the item it specifies that it is compatible only with iOS devices, which is obviously not true since it doesn’t require those things, but that’s what they tell people; I’m assuming as a CYA-type measure. Regardless, I have been using it with my iPad and my Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, as well as occasionally with an older LG VK810 4G and until recently it has worked like a charm on all of them.

However, a couple of weeks ago it just stopped working on my iPad. Basically I dozed off for a while and when I woke up it no longer worked. I tried: charging both the stylus and the iPad; a hard reset of the iPad; replacing the tip of the stylus; invoking the name of the Shat; and various other things. When I tried it on my phone and my other tablet it worked fine and still does. I contacted Heiyo through Amazon but unfortunately I mentioned that it worked on my phone so they’re not interested in helping me. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could try? I can’t for the life of me figure out what could have happened.

Thanks!

Obviously some setting or something has recently changed on the iPad.

Did you make ANY recent settings changes to the iPad that might affect using the stylus?

Have Bluetooth ON?

Airplane mode ON?

Do you have ANY accessibility settings active?

Some thing has recently changed or different with your iPad for the stylus stop working.

The easiest way to try and rectify this issue is to take the “nuclear” approach.

Just go into the Settings App, General, Reset and try the Reset All Settings option.

Then, try another hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

Let’s see what happens next.

No bueno. I suppose the only thing left is a complete factory reset. There must be an app somewhere that’s causing the problem that did some sort of update that broke my stylus. Blergh. I don’t really want to do it but it’s going to bug me if I don’t at least try. Thank goodness for cloud storage, right?

Well, the Global Thermonuclear War option didn’t work, either. I give up. The only thing I can think of is something being mechanically wrong with my screen, but I don’t know that that fits either because I have a passive stylus with a woven metal tip that is usable. It doesn’t work very well, which is why I got this one, but it does do something.

Thanks for your help and if you have any other suggestions I’m certainly open to them, otherwise I think I’m just going to call it a day and decide how much I really need the stupid stylus. 😕

I found your stylus on Amazon.

This is the Heiyo Amber stylus that is supposed to work for 40 hours on a single charge? Correct?

According to the info on Amazon, this company has a lifetime replacement warranty on their stylus product!

I would call their customer support and just tell them that their stylus isn't working any longer with any of your devices.

Ask them/demand that they send you another free stylus.

They warranty their stylus product!

Also, in the Amazon description this stylus does not mention ANY use or compatibilty with any other mobile devices OTHER than Apple iDevices.

So, there is a possibility you may have damaged the stylus using it with Android devices which may have slightly different touch screen technology or different capacitive current requirements.

Also, I am not even sure you really want another one of these. There are 25% 1 and 2 star reviews of this stylus on Amazon.

Out of nearly 320 user reviews, this equates to 80 users who found this active stylus below average or poor to use on Apple iDevices.

If you want a very good, reliable rechargeable, fine-point “active” stylus or ANY stylus for iPad, I would purchase one of these DIRECTLY here.

http://www.adonit.net/

Ones I recommend from Adonit.

Non-Active, but precise disc tip (no palm on screen. Need special, non-conductive drawing/writing glove to lay hand/palm on the screen).

Adonit Pro 3

http://www.adonit.net/jot/pro/

Rechargeable “Active” powered, fine tip stylus (no palm on screen. Need drawing/writing glove).

Adonit Dash 3

If you want to place your palm on the screen while you write or draw ( without having to purchase a special writing/drawing glove ) I strongly recommend the Adonit Pixel stylus.

http://www.adonit.net/jot/pixel/

(option of a drawing/writing glove, but not needed. Has palm rejection per compatible apps).

It supoorts over two dozen apps. Most are of the more popular, well know ones.

There is some initial stylus setup in most of these two dozen apps.

The Adonit Pixel isn't just a simple turn on the stylus, turn on Bluetooth on the iPad and just start writing.

The Pixel needs to be paired with each compatible app and some settings like hand/palm position and stylus pressure settings will need to be initially setup to get this stylus to work, but once this is done, this stylus works wonderfully.

I love Adonit and own 4 or 5 of their stylus offerings.

All of their powered stylii have 10-15 minute auto shutoff.

Here are two other active stylii I highly recommend from The Joy Factory.

Both have 5 minute auto shutoff. No palm on screen. Need special, non-conductive drawing/writing glove to lay your hand on the screen.

Standard replaceable battery “Active” carbon fibre fine point tip stylus

My Mom and I have this one as well.

If you use very high quality AAA batteries or AAA Lithium batteries, the performance of this stylus is very good!

The batteries should last anywhere from 3 to 6 months or so or, somewhat, longer depending on usage.

Good Luck to You!
