I was using Preview for a while and suddenly, all menus from right clicking menus, the top bar, and pop up menus for logging out and shutting down went completely blank. They go back to normal after restarting and logging out and logging back in. I've been told it might be due to an overload in the system, but it sounds kinda unlikely since it was just Preview. Does anyone know why this happens?

better don't wait for them 😀 talked me 1 hour trough till an Macbook Specialist on the Hotline. He was not really helpful nor was he willing to take the issue seriously. I hang up in the end totally waste of time.
What helped for me was reinstalling MACOS (no data lost) , took me 40min. So far no problems for 2 days.

I have had what seems to be the same issue for a couple of months. I have to log out to make it go away. It only occurs randomly after a while using the machine - never immediately. Dying to find a solution!
Actually you can fix it partially by unchecking "Automatic graphics switching", but it will run hight performance all the time which of course make your battery drain much faster. As i understand there are some problem with low GPU in 2018 macbooks...
It's good to see im not the only one with this problem. I've looked into it more and it seems like past MacOS Sierra, Preview has been causing this problem. Maybe it's a software bug or compatibility error with the system update. Hopefully it will be solved soon. There doesn't seem to be an indication whether it will happen or not when using Preview whether you have it open or not. Just the fact that you used it seems to be enough to make it happen and it's just a ticking time bomb at that point.
I have the same problem ... started mid June. Given this thread start April 2018 and no solutions ... not good. Suspect an OS upgrade.
Weird part is I log out and back in, the menus are all populated. But after a while they go empty.

Why is Apple Support so lazy? I have to fight my way up to the top to reach someone who is really in charge. Already nearly 50 people (who REPORTING) have the same problem for months.
Really annoying. Now fighting that they take this problem seriously.
Fingers crossed but a week ago I reinstalled High Sierra and the problem has not so far recurred. This makes me think it was a corrupt system file somewhere. Worth a try if you haven't done so already.
Did also an reinstall will see if that helps.
Summary from 1 hour with Apple on the phone. Total waste of time. They want todo a screenshare with me (for what?) ok nice offer, but I want them to look into their Community Discussion board and take THIS question here seriously and forward it to one of their Developer Teams of MACOS to check the bug and try to fix it. Or at least find why it occurs. But hey they not interested at all in that. Really disappointing, they should at least have someone who gets a notification when a question reaches 50+ "I have the same question" in their OWN discussion board.
Just purchased a 2018 15" MacBook Pro and after setting it up and installing all my applications I noticed the same issue. Had to force restart to fix it. Not sure if it is an issue with a graphic driver of some other bug. Hopefully Apple is working a fix in the background. We all know how they hate to admit a flaw in their designs.
Really? This bug bothers me for half a year and noone from Apple is doing anything to fix it?
I did partition recovery and this helped for period of time but after couple of updates the bug is back ;-(
I have this same problem. These are what the apple menu and the bottom menus look like. I restart and it went away briefly and then came right back again.
Same issue here. Forced restart is the only solution I found so far. Restart twice per day us extremely inconvenient
Any other suggestion/ solution to fix it?

It's not just Preview...I was just working in Browser Windows and it did the same thing.

No answer from Apple? Really? I think it is quite serious issue whan I work on something and than suddenly I have to "only" restart my Mac to get the text back.
