Macintosh HD not available using Option key

I have a 2017 iMac running High Sierra and Windows 10 in Bootcamp.

I have always been able to use the option key to select the Macintosh HD at bootup. However, this option has disappeared, and the screen offers only Windows and the Recovery Drive.

I can restart in the Mac OS using the bootcamp utility in Windows.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks for your quick response. The Macintosh HD is visible in the Startup Disk Manager.

I did a bit of detective work and recalled that the only change I had made to the MacOS was the installation of WD Discovery (an app which provides a cloud based method of delivering software, updates and notifications for external USB drives). Once that was uninstalled, the Mac HD reappeared at bootup when pressing the Option key.

Lesson learned!

Do you have the Macintosh HD visible in the Startup Manager?

>System Preferences>StartUp Disk

If you're in Startup Manager and can't see your startup disk, press Option-Shift-Command-Period. If that works, do this each time you want to start up from the device or from a startup disk connected to it.

Not really important, now, but You should be able to boot to macOS by holding the X key. I haven’t tried in a while, and I’m not at a Mac to check.

Good one Barney-15E 🙂

OS X Startup Volume: X key held down will start up your Mac from an OS X startup volume when it would otherwise boot from a non-OS X volume, like a Windows partition
