MacBook Pro screen flickering solution

Hello. Has anyone had random screen flickering running High Sierra10.13.4? This is a new issue that started last weekend and its now continuing. Only change to configuration was installing Office 2016 a few days before flickering started. Sometimes after opening the cover I am getting a pink screen before it loads the wallpaper...

I have had issues this since this past spring when I updated to High Sierra on my Mac Book Pro. My screen after closing the lid and unhooking from my daisy chained Thunderbolt displays would have small square boxes. I thought it would be fixed in an update to High Sierra but two or three updates, no fix. The computer would reboot after each time I had an issue, so the finger print login was useless, etc. After reading this thread I went ahead and tried Mojave Beta. That has fixed my issue. I believe most people that are having the issue are on High Sierra(new purchase issues or after upgrades.) I got my MacBook last fall and didn't have any issues on the OS before High Sierra.

Hello!

Okay, so it's maybe nothing to do with it but that's what I experienced.

I bought my Mac in June and had no problem with it for 1-2 weeks. Then I took my Mac on a plane with me and the problem started. Read this article and reseted NVRAM and SMC as suggested and the problem seemed to be solved, I had no issues until now when I took my Mac on a plane once again.

I just reseted NVRAM and SMC again to see but I'm going home tomorrow..

Let me know what you think, I know it sounds crazy.

As the loyal Apple product owner, I am so disappointed about 2017 macbook pro 15 inch. I started seeing this issue a couple of months right after I paid around $2700 to get the top model last year. At the beginning, I thought it might be the software glitch and will be addressed by the later OS update. But recently, I started the screen flickering issue more frequently. So I decided to do some google search and found a lot of 2017 macbook pro owners reporting the same issue.

Today, I finally got a chance to stop by the Apple store at South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, CA. The Apple technician did some hardware diagnostics. After that, he told me that he saw this similar issue before. It is the hardware issue, not related to my daily usage, However, I need to pay $800 for the logic board replacement because my 2017 macbook pro just passed the 1-year warranty. I was shocked. Then he asked me to talk with his manager. His manager came. The guy (Josh Yu) started convincing me that it is my problem, not Apple's, if it passed the 1-year warranty. It is my responsibility to pay all the cost to fix the hardware issue even though it is not related to my daily usage. He even gave me an example of buying a BWM car which could have the hardware issue as well. What a ********!

We paid the premium price for the Apple product, because of its reputation in the product quality. I can pay $2700 to get almost any latest laptop model in the market. The quality of 2017 macbook pro 15 inch is really bad. I will not make the same mistake again. This is probably the last Apple macbook I will purchase.

To All the current 2017 macbook pro users:

If you see the screen flickering issue and it is under 1-year warranty, please go to the Apple store or contact their customer support ASAP.

If it is out of the 1-year warranty, it will be your responsibility to pay $800 for the hardware issue introduced by the Apple design.

I am having similar problems with my 2016 MacBook Pro. A few weeks back I noticed that the screen colors had gotten muted and often had a blue green hew to them. Also, some vertical lines have started to appear from time to time -- sometimes this can be corrected when you push the screen all the way back so not sure if a cable or wire is binding but the computer is less than 2 years old. When I took it to the Genus bar they looked at it and said i need a screen replacement for 600 dollars since I was out of warranty. His other option was to live with it and /or use an external monitor--- Not a good answer ! I told him I bought a laptop to be able to take it on the road and travel for my job- I dont have a desk job ! Needless to say I am not happy with a computer that is less than 2 years old and now has a defective screen !

Anyone have any suggestions on a fix that will cost less than 600 ??

Thank you

yeah me too. I just got my new macbook 13" (2018) 3 days ago and the moment I started it (for the first time) the apple log turned turquoise for a couple of seconds and then turned back white. I thought its probably one of the design features that apple has brought up in this model...

but after 2 days of using it lightly, I noticed the turquoise color flashing again on my background.

after that, I performed the SCM and NVRAM reset, and this hasnt happened again, but I am wondering since then if it will start happening again down the road.

I havent paid for apple care for this one coz I havent had any problems with my old mac or ipads or iphones (and I trust APPLE products). but now I am thinking what if my system goes bad after 1-2 years...

Any update as to why this is happening? I cannot seem to find a solution to this issue. I brought my Macbook Pro Retina 13" Touchbar to Apple Store but didn't have a picture of what my screen was doing. For some reason- when I brought it to Apple Store, the screen was fine and didn't flicker. 😐

So the genius asked me to take a picture when it happened and if I am willing to leave my MBP to them, i won't have my Macbook for probably 1-2 weeks depending on the hardware issue (if there's any). I use my MBP for school a lot and cannot afford to lose it that long. I hope the upcoming Mojave update will end this dilemma.

Me too, after a clean install of Mojave on a late 2016 MBP: flicker, flicker, flicker. At least it's less noticeable with dark appearance windows. Oh Apple, dear apple, this one's a lemon and I fear, that after 24 years in your arms, we must part although I rest assured that other caring and capable suitors eagerly await my personal computing dollars.

This sound like the MacKeeper trojan has infected your system. Beware of Googling how to remove it as the search results include the MacKeeper trojan so if your problem isn't due to it you will inadvertently install it.

It is such a malevolent infection I'm unclear as to why Apple doesn't have a clear and unambiguous solution posted somewhere prominent for all Apple users to access. My son recently suffered from at university in the last week of his essays. One tell-tale sign, apart from the flickering and the mouse pointer being uncontrollable, is tediously long boot-up time.

I'm going to check out a different forum with a question about it in case anyone has a definitive way to remove it. Booting in Safe Mode and then applying MalwareBytes scan worked for my son initially but it came back after a couple of hours. I think as well as the scan some files need to be removed manually but which ones and where are they? Without removing them it seems to redownload itself or in some way reinstall itself.
