Can a macbook pro 9,2 be upgraded to High Sierra?

I have a Macbook Pro 9,2 (13" 2012 model, with the faster processor, 750GB disk, 8GB RAM, MD102LL) which will not boot into 10.13. For my job, I manage a couple of hundred MBP 9,1s, which is the base model. None of us have ever had any problems upgrading any of our MD101's to run 10.13, but I cannot get MY MD102 to boot successfully off of any 10.13 disk. This is with a regular partition or recovery partition, internal disk or external disk, clone of a 10.13 image or working 10.11 upgraded through AppStore, even a Macbook Pro 9,1 booted in target disk mode (which runs 10.13 with no problems at all.) The system clearly believes that it can boot, as the partitions show up as bootable when I option-boot the computer. When I select a 10.13 partition, the progress bar starts, and it goes for awhile, and then it puts up the prohibitory sign (circle with slash through it.)

The system is pretty much original equipment. I had to replace the disk drive cable, but the failure to boot started with the old cable, and booting through an external doesn't use that cable. I have upgraded the memory to 16gb, but the computer behaves identically with the original pair of 4gb DIMMs. I was using a replacement 1TB 6G drive, but I returned that to the original 750gb 3G drive, too.

Does anybody have any clues as to what I can do to troubleshoot this? (Can somebody confirm that they have a MBP 9,2 that they've upgraded to 10.13 and it works?)

Aha! It’s 10.13.3! When I followed your link to instructions for downloading the installer, I realized that I already had an installer in my /Applications directory, so, just for yucks, I installed it on an external disk and YIPPEE! It booted right up at the end of the install into Setup Assistant. I was able to create an account and log in.

My next step was to install it again and try to transfer the data from my 10.13.3 disk. It informed me that my disk was a later version of the OS, and offered to update. At the end of the update when it tried to reboot I got the prohibitory sign.

The various and sundry installs which I have tried to boot from have all been 10.13.3 and 10.13.4— THAT is the problem...
