Late 2008 13" MacBook not detecting brand new battery

I bought a late 2008 13" Aluminum Unibody MacBook on eBay. Supposedly, according to the description, Apple had said the computer's battery function would perform normally with a new battery. When I received the computer, it didn't even detect the battery inside it as it displayed [x] for the battery indicator. The battery indicator on the side of the case also showed signs that the computer did not detect the battery. I purchased a replacement third-party battery and the computer does not detect that one either. I've tried PRAM and SMC resets. If you would like more details, check out the Ask Different post I made (hardware - Late 2008 13" MacBook not detecting brand new battery - Ask Different).

Thank you.

I would start to have a look here: About Mac notebook batteries - Apple Support, there is a section regarding what to do if a battery is not recognized: be sure to have reset the SMC as described into the article. If still doesn't work I don't think you have other chance than going to an official support center.

They might look at it and provide tips, but at this point Apple doesn't provide batteries for a device that old. I'm not sure how they approach it if someone is asking for help with getting an aftermarket part to work.

Should the battery itself prove to be adequate and workable, there may be

a few things you could do (steps in SMC reset used to be helpful, not just

the final 'reset' but ahead of that end) because I found that older MacBook

13-inch model (my MacBook1.1 early 2006) when it sits too long, battery

is no longer recognized. Or IF it is, doesn't fully charge beyond 29%.

Took me about an hour of working through the pre-SMC steps, to get the

older replacement (non-Apple) battery to get past the under 40% mark.

Then expect at least 14-24 hours before attempted use or testing the Mac.

And then I also did the main SMC reset, as a final farewell to arms.

The pre-SMC reset instructions (where available; most vanished with revised

Support article update in late 2017) seemed to help. Also there are these from

a mac-centric vendor who used to sell quality replacement batteries for Apples.

..Process seems to work for any third-party batteries or older portable Apple macs..
