Won't awaken properly

I am running macOS High Sierra v10.13.4 on a late 2012 iMac (iMac13,2). FV is turned on.

Recently I have twice used the sleep button under the apple logo to put the Mac to sleep. Both times jiggling the mouse did nothing. The Mac did not respond. After a while of mouse jiggling I briefly tapped the power button. Both times I promptly saw my normal desktop wall paper however, it was very fuzzy, like it had frosted glass over it. My account name was there, with a red circle with a white check mark in it above my PW entry point. I've never seen that before, except for these two incidents. The mouse was responsive. Both times I entered my login PW, hit enter, and the Mac froze. No mouse, no nothing. So after waiting a few minutes, I held the power button and shut it down. Upon powering up the gray screen flashed briefly for showing me the normal login screen (gray with PW entry point and progress indicator). I was able to log in. Both time I ran Etrecheck and nothing unusual was reported. The Mac did not complain after restarting, e.g. did not inform me of an abnormal shutdown.

This is new behavior. I have previously slept the Mac and never had a problem awakening it.

In that case you have done everything possible to resolve the problem on your own, and you will need to contact Apple and put them to work on it: Contact Support.

At your option you could run Apple Hardware Test but only two outcomes are possible: it will either identify a specific hardware fault (probably the SMC) that only Apple can fix, or it will report "no trouble found" when in fact there is trouble... that only Apple can fix.

Make absolutely certain all vestiges of "Intego" are in fact permanently and irrevocably removed. My notes indicate removing it required using its dedicated uninstaller app, but using it left system-modifying components behind that required manual removal. That's a typical characteristic of such things, and the reason restoring a Mac from a Time Machine or equivalent backup created prior to its installation is the only method I rely upon.

I ran performed the applicable steps in the prescribed order. The problem did not resolve. Here's the Etrecheck report. And yes, my AV SW is still there, although the net barrier FW is disabled.

I'll call Apple.

Yes. No ravell'd sleeve of care to knit up.

My initial concern was that a computer function that had worked correctly suddenly no longer did.

I can appreciate that also. It is the primary reason for encouraging you to contact Apple, and perhaps solicit a Genius Bar's diagnosis and / or recommendations. Besides, it might not cost anything. You might also try repeating the SMC and NVRAM resets you already did. There is no harm in doing so.

On the other hand, other than the sleep mode problem, the Mac works fine. Does sleep mode offer anything other than saving pennies of electricity? The energy consumption of this Mac is a pimple on an elephant's hind end in the scheme of things, and I already have very low electricity usage, so unless there is some other benefit I'll just leave things alone, and not sleep the Mac. When I am away for extended periods I shut it down anyway.

Apr 17, 2018 8:14 AM in response to John Galt

Thanks for confirming that sleep mode is intended only to save a tiny amount of electricity, with no other function.

My initial concern was that a computer function that had worked correctly suddenly no longer did. I am sensitive to things like that, not because I care about every feature and function, but because it may be indicative of a pending problem. The canary in the coal mine. Similarly, can I ignore that new noise under the hood of my truck, or do I need to investigate it further (just went thru that and the dealer could find nothing. Time will tell)?

This is an old (by Apple standards) computer. I've owned it just 5 years. I suspect Apple doesn't test their new OS and OS patches on old hardware. And they certainly can't test every configuration. I also suspect that Apple may be well aware that newer OS features may simply not work on every machine, i.e. if something works on 90% of their hardware, then that is probably good enough, so ship it. Let them eat cake as they say, for the other 10%. And if even half the media buzz about Apple rushing SW to market without sufficient testing is true, then it is not surprising that problems will crop up.

In defense of Apple, some months ago a smart tech remoted in (the first tech that remoted in found nothing wrong) and indeed verified a Safari flaw that had popped up after I upgraded to High Sierra. He observed it and documented it. I have noticed that the flaw has recently disappeared. So I am guessing that flaw was above the cut line and they fixed it.

No. Nothing.

Furthermore, on a strictly monetary basis you're far more likely to spend more on the $29 out of warranty AppleCare support fee than you are likely to save on electric utility costs over the remaining life of that Mac vs doing what you propose.

From Apple's environmental report for that model iMac (see below) its power consumption while "on" but with the display "off" is about 21W. If it remains in that mode for eight hours a day (in other words you're not actively using it) given an electric rate of 12¢/kWh you will spend $7 more per year having it idle than it would consume in "real" sleep—about one watt.

https://www.apple.com/environment/reports/docs/imac_27inch_oct2012.pdf

So: If AppleCare is able to solve the problem for $29, you would need over four years to that investment to break even.

On the other hand I just like things working the way they're designed to work, and would be personally motivated to solve the problem for that reason alone. Electric costs though? The difference is almost literally nothing. One fancy cup of coffee a year.

Want to venture way off topic? Certain questionable guidance leads Mac users to conclude it's a good idea to use a power strip and shut it off (or just unplug the Mac) so that it can't even draw the fleapower required for its NVRAM when the Mac is "off"—much less than one W. While that advice may be applicable to some electronic devices, doing that with an iMac means its NVRAM battery isn't likely to last the ten or so years it's supposed to last, requiring premature replacement. That's asking for orders of magnitude greater expense vs just leaving it plugged in, even if you were to buy the battery and replace it on your own.
