Getting false notifications from mail

iPhone 6s. This happened when I applied 11.3

Basically, mail repeatedly shows me that I have three new messages in a gmail inbox. If I go to the inbox, eventually it'll confirm that they don't exist, but randomly again later I'll get the little "3" on the mail icon, and it'll be the same thing. It thinks I have new messages, but I don't.

Obviously, no false notifications are showing up on my desktop or my iPad. But for some reason, the iPhone keeps thinking I've got three new gmail emails when I don't.

I tried restarting the device. I tried deactivating the gmail email, force-quitting the mail app, and then re-activating the gmail email ... first thing, it tells me I've got those three new messages again. (I haven't completely deleted the gmail account yet, just deactivated it.)

Any other ideas about how to fix this?

Hello, Ron Moskovitz.

Thank you for getting back and providing us those additional details. Here's another suggestion. Try searching for "Unread" in the search bar of the Mail app. Don't add the quotes just search for unread. Also, have you tried going to Gmail on a web browser to see if you can locate those emails? One other thing to mention is to try turning off notifications for the Mail app and turn them back on. Here's a link just in case: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

That didn't solve the problem.

I deleted the account and then re-added it, and the three mystery messages notifications have shown back up.

Also, they show up when I'm on the Mailboxes selection screen, but register as not being there when I click on the gmail mailbox itself. However, I can make them show up consistently by going to the mailbox selection screen and waiting. It will check for mail, and see three new messages, give me the notification - but those messages don't appear to exist and the notification goes away if I enter the gmail inbox or the all mailboxes section.

Hello, Ron Moskovitz.

It's my understanding that your Mail app badge icon keeps showing 3 messages but you're unable to find out why. I may be able to help with this. You've done some greats steps to troubleshoot the issue and deleting the email account is a good step to take but should always be done as the last step. We know it's specific to the Gmail account and not the Mail app because they showed up after you activating the Gmail account. This is probably just older emails listed as unread.

I would suggest checking your mailbox settings: Use mailboxes to organize emails on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Depending on your email service provider, you may be able to add a mailbox for unread messages to help you find them.

If this doesn't help then check out the step #1 in this article before removing the account: If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.
Let me know if this helps.

So turning notifications off and back on doesn't solve the problem.

Even with notifications off, the false messages show up on the inbox selection screen. When I turn the notifications back on, they show up on the icon badge on the home screen again.

Also, I don't think this problem is caused by a message on the gmail server because the problem does not occur on my iPad which is connected to the same gmail account.
