AOL Password Required

This is a long-standing issue with AOL mail on multiple Macs and versions of macOS. Mail keeps popping up the msg that a password is required for one of my AOL email accounts. I log on to my AOL email account in question through the AOL website and access the email account without problem. I paste the same password i used to login to the website into the Internet account section of system preferences and in red text see "unable to verify account name or password."

This problem has literally existed for years, but it is getting worse in later versions of macOS. In the past, the alert would simply show up in the middle of the screen and could be covered up by other windows. On modern versions of macOS, the alert appears in the upper right-hand corner of my screen, blocking that section of the screen.Plus, it is now popping up up to four reminders at a time of the same error. As soon as i close one of the messages, it reopens again.

I checked out the Apple support document on the issue and the steps did not apply to me, since I can use the password on the AOL website no probLem. Is there a way to resolve this issue once and for all aside from deleting that email account? Is ther a way to at least suppress the erroneous message?
