Hi I had some professional video done and want to edit it in imovie. When I import it I just see black strips in the media. it imports as normal, plays as normal but no pic or sound. Do I need to import some codec so I can see the video? What else might be wrong. I have version 10.1.1 of imovie and the latest update on the operating system on my mac, OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

If you are seeing black strips and no pic or sound, I don't see how your statement can be possible, unless I am somehow misunderstanding.
I suggest that you update to current iMovie version 10.1.9, and High Sierra, if your computer will let you do so, or unless you have some reason for using iMovie `10.1.1 and Yosemite.
If it still doesn't play normally after the updates, make a duplicate of your video and use the free download, Handbrake, to convert it to Mp4/AAC. Then see if it plays normally.

Hi Yes sorry did update to high siera. When I say plays as normal, you can click the space bar and the cursor moves along like its playing but no image or sound. My videographer gave it to me again as a quick time video file and it loaded ok so thank for your help.
Glad it worked out for you. As I suspected, it was a format issue.
