2011 iMac Blue Screen

Hi all. I've been trying to find an answer for this issue for a while and not been able to find anything.

My 2011 27" has performed faultlessly in the 7 years I've had it but in the last week it has started throwing up a bright blue screen at various points noted below. I have not updated any software for quite some time but I have recently installed Avast security (free).

The times it has thrown up the blue screen:

1. While working in Photoshop (nothing else open)

2. While composing an email with Photoshop open in the background

3. After booting in safe mode I went to log in using my Wacom Bamboo and the screen flickered blue and went grey.

4. After turning it off, removing the wacom bamboo just in case that was the problem and trying to start up in safe mode it now won't even get to the login screen and the screen is just grey.

What on earth is wrong with it? It's stopping me from working!

To rule out any 3rd party software download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Also try resetting the SMC and NVRAM:

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac ...

How to reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Next, run the Apple Hardware Test: How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

If you have the AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphic card it may be failing. That year iMac, 12,2, had a recall for bad cards. I had to have mine changed. But my symptoms were not like yours.

If all else fails make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius Bar to have a free diagnostic check. That will tell you definitively what the problem is.

Worth adding that it would occasionally flicker once or twice as well.

Just now it went absolutely bat-**** crazy flickering all over the place... it went grey with the various gradations of grey going up and down the screen and then it came back again. I had not long started up Photoshop CS6.

I had terrible trouble trying to get this reply to send on Safari. Kept trying and trying... then it went crazy again and went orange and stayed there.

Usually it just goes straight to a colour, not jump around.

The pic shows the effect but I've had to zoom in to get it to size.

End of report

Apr 19, 2018 5:06 AM in response to Old Toad

Thanks - done. It happened again today whilst streaming music from the iMac to a Yamaha AV Amp, whilst also working in iPhoto. The screen went to a completely muddy brown colour (with various gradations of this brown running vertically - this is the same regardless of the screen colour). The computer carried on streaming the music track it was playing but nothing else would work. When it came to the end of the track no more music played.

I restarted and followed your instructions to remove Avast and I ran Etrecheck again. Performance wise it's much better although it had just been restarted

The latest Etrecheck report is below.

EtreCheck version: 4.2.1 (4C020)

Description:

The computer will randomly display a coloured screen sometimes. I have to restart it to get it back. Today while playing music through the AV amp, (also also working in iPhoto) it froze again with a muddy brown screen. The computer carried on streaming the track that was playing even with the screen as it was. At the end of the track it didn’t play any more songs. I restarted. I have now uninstalled Avast security also to see if that helps.

It appears that it's a GPU problem. It's not covered any more by Apple but you might want to have it confirmed with a visit to the nearest Apple Genius Bar for a free diagnosis.

I noticed that Dropbox is using a fair amount of resources. If you can, try removing it f rom the Users Login Items and launch Dropbox manually only when you need it. That should help with the overall performance.

In the cleanup section remove those files listed.
