Last few macOS High Sierra updates not completing

I've seen variations of this issue in the forums but mine seems a little different from what I've found so far -

Every day I see a software update notification in the App Store for macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Update. I click update, it downloads the file and restarts the machine. No error messages - it looks like everything goes fine. But the next time the AppStore updates, it shows the same update needing to install. It has happened since 10.13.2. I tried several workarounds, including installing in Safe Mode, downloading the Combo Update from Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update and installing, detaching all external drives and devices in case they're causing issues. Nothing seems to work. I have probably tried to install this thing 28 times.

Any ideas?

Did you do a clean install of 10.13.4 and then restore your Time Machine from SetupAssistant?

I was going to suggest booting in recovery mode using Option-Command-R (this article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 explains how the different key sequences get you into recovery mode in a way which installs the version that you want) and then choosing "Reinstall macOS"

Cathy! You're a genius! I have spent so many hours on this stupid thing and your suggestion worked on the first try - took maybe 20 mins to reinstall and now it shows me at 10.13.4.

I'm still a little nervous because it's now showing I need to install Security Update 2018-001, but I'll hope for the best.

Thanks again!

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
