How to upgrade RAM on A1278?

Guy I know has a 2012 MBP with 4gb ram [2x2] and wants to upgrade to 8gb. Can he replace one 2gb stick with an 8gb like this please so he will have 10gb total?

Or would he need to get 2x4gb sticks?

Either situation would work. In the past I'd say to match vendor RAM with the same vendor along with all other specs but that has become less and less of a consideration with newer computers.

However the correct RAM for a 2012 MBP is PC3 12800

if you mix speeds then all RAM will slow down to the slowest speed, but I don't think the 1278 can use PC38500 and I wouldn't' bother if they can use 12800

I'd do an SSD in that as well if they have not done so already; it would be like a new system and noticeably faster than when they bought it.
