Time capsule failure?

My computer slowed down. Then there was no time machine backup to my Time Capsule. When I tried to do a backup it wouldn't complete it. So I am using a different external drive for my backup and have installed Google wi-fi as my router. My computer was fine after I switched the backup to a different disk. And my internet speed is now much faster.

I am trying to check the 3T Time capsule to see if it can be repaired, but if a attach it directly to my computer so I can use Disk Utility, it doesn't mount and doesn't show in Disk Utility. Is there a way I can do this, or should i trash the Time Capsule?

3TB TC is either Gen4 or Gen5. We need to know which.. tall one or flat one??

Plugging the TC directly to the computer makes no difference.. it is now and forevermore a network drive.

I am assuming you plugged it in via ethernet.. USB won't work at all.

You cannot use disk utility on a network drive.. so open the airport utility.. if you see the TC.. click on the icon and go to the disk tab.

If the TC is not showing in disk utility you need to reset it to factory and start over.. but it might be complicated setup as your wireless is working to the google wifi.. what IP does it get??

The TC will change to 10.0.1.1 after a reset.. so you should be able to pick it up. However if wireless is using 10.x.x.x as well you might have trouble.

Thank you for answering my basic question. I will try setting it up again as a network drive and see if I can follow your instructions. It is the tall 3t Time capsule. I also have a flat 2T Time capsule that I’m no longer using. I’m basically trying to see if I can use either of these for extra storage drives rather than Time machine drives. But it sounds like it may not be worth the trouble. The smaller portable drives are probably better suited to my needs.
