Can Airplay from Macbook on Apple TV but not Airplay Mirroring

Hi Apple community. I am running OSX 10.8.5 on Macbook pro and have Apple TV Model A1842 (32GB) tvOS 11.3 (15L211). Good signal strength on wi-fi network to both devices. Followed all the forums and suggestions to get Airplay mirroring but no joy. As mentioned in the title I can play from iTunes (movies and music) but cannot mirror screen onto the HDTV. Getting old and need a bigger screen to write emails etc.

Am reluctant to update to High Sierra as am running Microsoft 2011 and very happy with it.

Forums claim Mountain Lion OS X is compatible anyhow.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Seanfromumdloti!

I understand that you're unable to use AirPlay mirroring, and I'm happy to help. Here are the requirements for using AirPlay:

Requirements for using AirPlay

Here's a quick way to find out if your Mac supports AirPlay: Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Displays. If you don't see a “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available” checkbox, your Mac doesn't support AirPlay.

Minimum requirements if your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network:

To find out what network your Apple TV (4th generation) is using, go to Settings > Network. On earlier Apple TV models, go to Settings > General > Network. The Apple TV should be on the same network as your Mac.

Minimum requirements for peer-to-peer AirPlay, which lets visitors connect their Mac or iOS device to your Apple TV without passwords or connecting to your Wi-Fi network:

Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV

Cheers!
