How do I transfer a few photos from iMac 27" to iPad?

I'm still finding out how to use my new iMac (27", 3.5 GHz, 8MB RAM, 1 TB hard drive.) I want to transfer a few photos from my iMac to my iPad, which is a couple of years old. I downloaded and updated the iPad software today.

I have never created any folders or stored any files on my iPad, so I don't know how to do this. I would like to transfer about 10-20 photos out of the 10,000 on my iMac to my iPad so I can show them to people. Any advice? Thanks
