I want to be able to respond to messages directly in the "parent" Mail app window instead of in a new window that opens for each message reply. It appears this feature isn't available, which (if it's not) is C.R.A.Z.Y. and so irritating. Does anyone know how I can change settings to reply to messages directly in the reading pane?
MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)
My reference is not to full screen split view. See the image attached of Outlook? In Outlook, you can reply to a message in the same window in which you read messages. I want to know how to do that in Mail.
I know how to send a reply. How do I change settings so that when I press that reply button I am able to write my reply directly in the reading pane instead of having to write it in a new separate window?

In my experience with Mail app, composing/reply window has always been a separate window
with a different toolbar. I haven't seen any preference option for changing it.
A user can increase/decrease quote level.
Click the "Reply" button the Mail toolbar to send a reply to the sender of selected message.
If your reference is to Full Screen Split view, disable that feature in
Mail > Preference > General > "Prefer opening messages in split view when in full screen".
