iCloud Notes available on iPhone offline.. correct?

Just checking before I take a trip.... I have a bunch of notes that I would like to access that are currently available on my iPhone but in the iCloud section of Notes. When I put the phone in airplane mode I can still access these notes.


Are the notes actually copied to the iPhone at all times while online, but also available while offline, and any reason that I would need to download the notes to the iPhone to access them if I plan to be offline or without service?

Yes, your notes will remain available to you while your phone is offline, any changes you make will sync next time you connect. Be aware however, if you are offline for extended periods and make changes to the same note on different devices you will encounter conflicts.
