Native FCPX archive function - vs - copy of SD card contents

I have only just noticed the Archive function that is located within the Import window in FCPX.

I realise it has probably been there for years - but for some reason I never noticed it.

For purposes of backing up my raw footage I have simply been keeping a copy of the contents of every SD card I shoot.

My question is, should I simply carry on as before? Or are there advantages to using the native Archive function that FCPX offers?

The advantage of the FCP archive is that it’s a closed bundle immediately recognizable by the application as camera content. It’s a secure container for the raw media and all the associated metadata the camera generates and stores on the card. Being closed is a problem if other applications need to access the content. There is no right answer, but I think for the majority of users FCP archives should be used.
