How to transfer iPad 2 photos w/o iCloud

I have an old iPad 2 (currently have iPad pro, iOS 11.2.6) with 4,000+ photos and several videos. Unfortunately, I never updated the iOS on my iPad 2 because I didn't feel comfortable using iTunes. The iOS on iPad 2 is 4.3.5 so I'm unable to backup to iCloud. I have an old Macbook Pro running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 I live near an Apple store but they are always so busy and not sure they would be helpful. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get my photos off my iPad 2 so I can then be sure they are saved and backed up to either iCloud or an external hard drive? Thanks very much for your assistance!

You can plug in the iPad directly to the computer, and if the photos were taken with the iPad or produced on it somehow (not synced via iTunes from a computer at any point) you should be able to use iPhoto, or even Image Capture to get them onto the computer.
