Macbook pro Battery replacement with keyboard??

Hi,

Daughter's battery had failed on MacBook pro after c4 years and would not charge after only 500 charge cycles so could only be used connected to power source. So she took it to our local Stormfront Apple store for a battery replacement / repair. They took it away then called my daughter with a quote of £440 to replace the battery. I queried that and they said that the battery was connected to the keyboard and that to replace the battery they would also need to replace the keyboard so that would be new as well. That sounded nonsense to me as not seen anything like that mentioned anywhere as part of replacing a battery. So have asked for it back and contemplating taking it to the nearest main Apple store.

They were also saying that the screen was starting to delaminate and that they could replace that as well for an additional c£440 so were asking for £880.

However, in case i am doing them a disservice - has anyone heard of this about the battery before? Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks.

We are end users like you but petty good at researching this stuff. However, the internal configuration can depend on the MacBook Pro screen size and sub-model. Some are more serviceable than others. If the computer will work on the mains, simple do "About this Mac" from the Apple menu. That will show both items of importance:

If the computer cannot run, please use this Apple support page to get the same information by serial number:

Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support

With the exact model we can consult some service sites that may give us a better idea of the situation with the keyboard.

That said, Apple US pricing for battery replacement here:

Mac Service Answer Center - Apple Support

shows a cost of $199 and service pricing in £ is usually the same. That page says nothing about requiring a keyboard replacement. Is this an Apple-owned retail store that quoted on the job or a reseller? I would print out the Apple pricing localized for your place of residence and show it the the manager and tell him you expect an explanation that doesn't sound like something John Cleese would write!

Me again.

I did a little research after posting and the batteries for 13- and 15-inch rMBPs are glued to the upper case. If stormfront is a reseller and not an Apple-owned location, then they are either lazy or do not have the tools/materials required to unstick the old battery from the upper case (holds the keyboard) that Apple uses.

I am in full accord with my esteemed colleagues--get thee to an Apple retail store!

Hi all. It's my daughters so don't have the exact model detail and she is at work at the moment so can't check the account and of course the reseller have hold of the machine currently.

Sounds like it is one that must be glued but i will go with the advice of getting an appointment with a genuine Apple store and go with what they say. Hopefully they can do something without replacing keyboard as well!

Thanks for the replies everyone - i will post updates as i get more info.
