Videos shot in landscape play in portrait

Using iPhone 8 with iOS 11.3. Orientation lock is not on. Shot three videos last night in landscape mode. I did not change orientation during video recording. All three show up today in Photos app on phone sideways. When I rotate the phone while watching, the video stays sideways. That is, the video rotates but the image remains with the bottom of the image on the left.

I can only watch the video now in full screen if I lock the rotation.

How does this happen, and how can I prevent it in the future?
