Cannot respond to texts

I have an iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 11.3 and frequently cannot respond to text messages as there is no "window or keyboard" to type into. When I reboot my phone it fixes it but I am having to reboot my phone 5 to 10 times per day to fix it. This needs to be fixed in the next update please. Or I need a better solution - is there one?
